How we handle our waste, what we call it, what we do with it, how we sort it, how we circulate it… is still in flux. As clarity comes and systems fall into place how do we keep the trust of our communities and keep them connected. What ways are we helping them to immerse themselves in the world of Reduce, Repair, Reuse and Rethink while we await the next word on REcycle. How do we grow a community that seeks out solutions and doesn’t just wait to be told what to do. Who is getting ahead of the game, kicking goals and building a connected and transitioning community? Costa and Cate have been snooping around the nation collecting some great projects to highlight and celebrate in this session. Sharpen your pencils, peeps. There’s still a big story to write.
What do Australians think about waste and recycling? The issue has gone mainstream in Australian society and there is a bigger appetite to find out more than ever before. So does that mean there is less or greater confusion?
Over the years, Planet Ark has investigated the knowledge, attitude and behaviour of Australians when it comes to waste and recycling. The research has explored trends in recycling knowledge, the use of away-from-home recycling programs, how many are taking action to reuse, and whether it varies between age groups, gender and location. By understanding the demographics of current perspectives, educators can better target behaviour change messaging.
Following this time in state government, Gayle worked as a Director in a number of NSW councils, primarily looking after service delivery and assets. She developed and delivered a number of waste management contracts on behalf of councils, as well as managed environment and regulatory departments, including rangers and compliance officers.
