Mt Piper energy recovery project update

Re.Group is working in partnership with EnergyAustralia to develop the Mt Piper Energy Recovery Project. This involves construction of a dedicated boiler that will be fired on circa 200,000 t/a of refuse derived fuel to create steam, which will be used at the existing power station to generate power for approximately 40,000 NSW homes.

The EIS was on public exhibition in early 2020. During the webinar Garth will provide an update on current project status and expected timelines, as well as discussing key aspects raised through the exhibition process.

Professor Bernadette McCabe, Principal Scientist, University of Southern Queensland

An overview of the Australian biogas industry and the importance of matching technology with feedstock for agro-industrial waste

Anaerobic digestion has received considerable interest from both the agricultural and municipal waste industries as a means to reduce waste discharge to sewers, waterways, landfill and land application, to reduce on-site energy costs, and improve public perception by reducing noxious odour emissions. While each of these industries produces significant quantities of solid and liquid wastes, industry-specific practices and the nature of the wastes produced can significantly influence the decision making process behind waste treatment technology adoption.

Successful biogas plants rely on a combination of steady, secure supply of feedstock that is matched with appropriate pre-treatment methods and conversion technology. This webinar will give an overview of anaerobic digestion in Australia and positions this aspect in the context of the Australian intensive livestock and food processing industry to illustrate the importance of matching technology with agro-industrial feedstock.

Pablo Gonzalez, Strategic Development Manager - Energy from Waste, Veolia Australia & New Zealand

Veolia’s overseas experience - Design, construction, operation & maintenance of an Energy from Waste Facility

With the impending mobilisation of the Kwinana Energy From Waste facility in Western Australia in 2021, Veolia ANZ is applying knowledge gained from colleagues in the United Kingdom and Europe with more than three decades of experience.

Through this webinar, Pablo will share some of the best practices in Energy From Waste (EfW) gained during a six month learning secondment with Veolia UK in 2019. He will identify key challenges in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of an EfW facility and offer solutions to meet these challenges. Challenges addressed will include land and plant equipment requirements as well as how to staff and roster these facilities.

Pablo will also cover environmental compliance and how to structure an EfW plant’s maintenance regime to maximise availability of the plant.
