This first session of our webinar series will be opened by Gayle Sloan, CEO, Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia (WMRR). Gayle will introduce the two international keynote presenters and provide a short update as to the current state of play within the waste and resource recovery industry.

Annette Synowiec, Director - Policy, Planning & Outreach, City of Toronto

Striving to be an international leader through an innovative program focused on sustainability

The City of Toronto's Solid Waste Management Services division strives to be a leader in innovative and sustainable solid waste management practices.

As part of its Long Term Waste Management Strategy (Waste Strategy), the City is working towards an aspirational goal of zero waste and a circular economy. Learn more about what the City is doing to reduce waste and move towards a circular approach that focuses on sustainability, product longevity, renewability, reuse and repair.

Dr Geoff Brighty, Managing Director, Environmental Sustainability UK

Innovation, policy and action – The latest UK response to the plastic waste and ‘resource opportunity’

Plastics leakage directly into the world’s oceans, as well as via freshwaters and land-air pathways represents a global system failure for managing plastic. Through recycling this material using circular thinking, we can reduce the consumption of natural resources, saving valuable sources of primary virgin feedstock and protect the environment from wasteful plastic pollution.

The webinar will look at the UK progress to improve its performance on plastic recycling, through a range of measures including support through innovation programmes, progressive policy development, market interventions and target setting, and importantly the business-led UK Plastic Pact.
