Compost Revolution: Success and challenges in data-driven community engagement for organics recovery with council partners.
David Gravina, Revolution Apps and JP Williamson, Waverley, Randwick, and Woollahra Councils
Details
The Compost Revolution is an innovative and effective program deployed by councils to educate residents and maximise uptake of home composting solutions. Integrated online education, support and delivery logistics, data-driven community engagement, and full impact monitoring provide a scalable model for significant and measurable resource recovery. Data show that councils who invest more in infrastructure and engagement achieve cost-neutrality and even save money on waste collection. With consistently positive feedback from participants, the program allows councils to better understand the motivations, challenges, associated behaviours, and demographical data of participants, serving as a powerful tool for reducing waste and empowering enduring sustainable behavioural change.

Since 2011 JP has worked for Randwick, Waverley and Woollahra Councils. In his own time, JP has founded 3 community bicycle reuse and repair centres, co-founded the Australian Student Environment Network, successfully negotiated $1Million of extra funding for Renewable Energy from Sydney University, and led the student arm of the successful campaign to protect the largest inland forest in NSW.
JP is trained as a biologist specialising in fungal-plant ecology. He really digs soil. JP loves hiking, sailing, and dancing.
