Yvette Dening, Senior Project Officer – Aboriginal Programs, NSW Environment Protection Authority

Waste Programs in Aboriginal Communities

Yvette identifies as a Kamilaroi woman who has worked in New South Wales Government the past 11 years with most of these years working with Local Aboriginal Lands Councils and Aboriginal Community Housing Providers across New South Wales. Throughout the past 11 years, Yvette has held a range of positions from Regulatory to Capacity Building with most of the work being with Aboriginal Communities. Yvette believes in listening to the mob on their needs and wants, with programs being codesigned with the mob to ensure better outcomes in Health, Housing, Education and Environment.

Yvette has recently joined the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and has been working on engaging and educating successful grant recipients through the Aboriginal Waste Programs. Without the past leaders, present and emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, New South Wales would not be where it is today. Caring for Country means a lot to all of our Nations, Yvette wants to lead and align herself with protecting not only the Environment in New South Wales but the People. Yvette prides herself on gaining the knowledge of the Waste Industry and assisting Local Aboriginal Communities where possible, even if it is referring to another service.

Jennifer Thwaites, Wilcannia Local Aboriginal Land Council

Wilcannia Aboriginal Waste Management Project

Jennifer Thwaites moved from Sydney thirty years ago to work as Wilcannia Central School’s head teacher and still calls Wilcannia home. In 2018 Jennifer won the Wilcannia Citizen of the Year Award for her tireless work as the Chief Executive Officer of the Wilcannia Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) and has been credited for steering Wilcannia’s economic development.

The Wilcannia LALC established a Return and Earn over-the-counter collection centre in May 2019, collecting more than 175,000 containers in the first ten months. Last year, Wilcannia LALC won the Keep Australia Beautiful Return and Earn Litter Prevention Award for its container recycling initiative that then became part of an overarching whole-of-town project, resulting in a 60 per cent reduction in litter.
